Non-Project Schools

In addition to mentors fulfilling their commitments to their allocated schools, numerous mentors have also sought to include other schools teachers – who are not directly part of the project in their workshops and training sessions. Whilst these teachers do not receive the direct individual attention that is given to the project teachers they do receive the valuable input which they could not obtain elsewhere. Numerous District Language Officers have requested that mentors assist in various training programmes that are not related to the project – specifically for non-project schools and where possible the mentors have always been encouraged to support and assist at these workshops.

These workshops have also been an excellent training ground for local teachers who have regularly accompanied the mentor on the training and taken charge of delivering the workshop to their colleagues from other schools. This has been particularly useful for the introduction of phonics as all schools are required to follow the KSSR system of using phonics, but the majority of the teachers are unsure of the approaches how to teach the subject and are unaware of the resources that are available to deliver their lessons.
