Language Resource Centre Competition

Image

Throughout 2011 numerous mentors assisted schools in setting up Language Resource Centres and this prompted SMR to sponsor schools in a competition to produce the best Language Resource Centre. In total 44 schools took part, having been given RM 1,000.00 to set up the room and then each was judged for their presentation and imaginative use of space and facilities.

The requirements for the centres selected were attractive, being clean and painted, along with posters and illustrations around the walls depicting various aspects of language. Many of these were bought commercially ormade by the teachers/ pupils for display around the centre.

There are also facilities available for reading materials and a comfortable place where pupils can look at books. This is not a substitute for the library, but can have supplemental material such as decodable readers, or short story books etc. Again, these can be bought commercially or made locally.

In addition there should be other materials such as:

  •       Language games - such as scrabble or boggle, either commercially bought or made locally
  •       Interesting worksheets on a variety of different subjects
  •       Flash cards of various sizes and subjects.
  •       Big Books - either commercially bought or made locally
  •       Craft and drawing materials
  •       Have specialist areas such as kitchens/ animals/ hospital etc.
  •       Anything to stimulate language activities

Photographs of all the participating schools were collected and made available to all the mentors for judging as to which schools had developed the best facilities. Judging was carried out by a team in the office in Kuala Lumpur, along with all the mentors who voted for their favourite and the results were as follows:

Prize South Zone North Zone Central Zone
1st SK Sentul SJK (T) BatuPekaka SK Tambun
2nd SK DesaTasik Agama Al Islahiyah SK Bongor
3rd SK Taman KlangUtama SK Permatang Raja SJK (C) Pei Cheng

Prizes for each zone are:

  •       1st Prize is RM 1,500.00
  •       2nd Prize is RM 750.00
  •       3rd Prize is RM 500.00

In addition to the competition mentors have assisted teachers to create a more conducive environment for the children to learn and practice English by decorating centres or designating specific areas where reading can take place or English activities can be carried out. This has been as sophisticated as converting an entire centre, to making a small reading area under the stairs.
