Whilst fulfilling the KPI’s determined by the sponsors – The Malaysian Ministry of Education is indeed important, we have never considered this criteria to be the only aim of the project.

This project has been about helping teachers by not just supplying them with hours of mentoring, but also providing materials and tools to help and enhance their approach to teaching

Furthermore, we have sought to assist teachers adopt a fresh attitude towards their lessons by introducing new communicative ideas, encouraging initiative and creativity in lesson planning and delivery and stimulating imagination to make the lessons more enjoyable for the children and more effective in helping them master English. This is just a small example of the initiatives that have been undertaken by the mentors to help the teachers become much more effective in their professions.

Decodable Readers

Both mentors and teachers have collaborated to produce a series of decodable reader books that are directly related to the KSSR 1 text book. These readers have been reproduced and distributed throughout many schools in Perak. We are currently seeking sponsorship to mass produce each of the books and make them available for a wider distribution.

Decodable readers are designed to supplement the current KSSR 1 contents relating to teaching reading using phonics. These books take individual sounds and through repetition students are able to practice them in real words. The other advantage of this approach is that the sentences are simple, short and rhythmic in nature and so they can be read by even very beginners learning to read. The texts are accompanied by interesting and fun illustrations so they are attractive for the children to use. Their simplicity and the rhythms they practice allow pupils to start blending sounds and give meaning to written script in a fun and meaningful way.

The 120 Decodable Readers were authored by mentors and teachers located throughout the project area, but particularly from those in Perak. This type of cooperation is typical of the project where mentors and teachers work hand in hand to produce supplementary materials to supplement the newly issued KSSR.
